marinersguide.com AAARGH! Abandoned Races and Other Small Disasters

Thank god it's September. Things have got to get better in September, right? WRONG! We are still running up hill at a nightmare's pace. It all started with the Epilepsy Cup. A halyard jumped the sheave and jammed halfway up while preparing for the race. And so we missed it. Once again CSA, the host club tried to start Sunday's race at Ordinary Point. Hey guys, thats where I go to get out of a storm. There is no wind in there. Please, next year, start the race out in the river.

After taking Mad Max home we headed for Skipjack Cove to pick up a car and driving down 213 we came across a lovely old power boat. To make a long story short we bought it for a song and we will be writing several columns about it in the near future. Cleaning up the boat and getting it in running order has taken time away from our racing, but the results are worth the effort.

Next we headed off for the Governor's Cup. This is an overnight race from Annapolis, Maryland to St. Mary's College. Normally we finish this race around 7:00am Saturday morning. This year we gave up around 10:00am drifting near Point No Point. Of 160 starting boats only 33 finished. The first boat to finish in our fleet missed dinner, spending over 23 hours on the water. Hey guys, how about shortening the race when there is no air? Please!

OK, we get back from the Governor's Cup and we head to New Jersey to try our hand at Tuna fishing.

We got some great pictures of Brian and Mikey landing a 200 pounder. We'll have the whole story up as soon as I catch my breath.

Our next stop was Annapolis for the CBYRA Race Week. Hurricane Dennis decided to finally come ashore making Saturday's racing wet and wild. Everyone was too busy hanging on and keeping our tiny little 27 footer upright to take any pictures. Sunday was canceled and we were so happy we brought the power boat down. At least we stayed dry while Dennis dumped rain and wind on Annapolis. With two boats to get home and still more rain and wind predicted we bowed out of Monday's race. But the Gods were not finished with us, the engine died off Poole's Island. So Thursday, while everyone else was racing we took the carburator apart and cleaned the jets. We missed the last race of the summer series and our last chance to get in the money. There was no joy in Mudville that night.

Friday was the annual Bob McVey race in Havre de Grace and things are finally looking up. We won the race thanks to a pick up crew. Thanks again to Ingo, Lyn and Lauren who filled in for our missing regulars.

With only six races left on our schedule we're looking forward to slowing down a little and getting some time to write about this summer's adventures.
