Around Alone claims another Fedor Konioukhov retired from the Around Alone Race. Just hours before missing the deadline to reach New Zealand, Fedor Konioukhov officially retired from the race. He will continue on, a few days behind the fleet, with COMSAT continuing to provide communications.

Quokka Sports nominated for Webby Award Quokka Sports has been nominated for a 1999 Webby Award for the best sports web site by the Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. Quokka Sports manages the Around Alone web site.

Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Guess who was named Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. Paul Cayard, but you knew that right. Betsy Alison received the woman award for the fifth time, passing Ted Turner who won the award four times.
