| Six lost in Sidney Hobart Race Larry Ellison won the 1998 Sidney-Hobart race on his Maxi, Sayonara. His victory was however saddened by the loss of six competitors during a severe storm. Sixty survivors were picked up by helicopter from dismasted yachts and heavy seas. British Olympic yachtsman Glyn Charles was still missing as of Dec 29, 1998. The race is being compared to the 1979 Fastnet when 19 sailors were lost. |
| Around Alone claims two ... so far Two boats have retired from the Around Alone Race; Mike Golding (Team Group 4) and George Stricker (Rapscallion III). George dropped out on Dec 22 in heavy seas. Mike went aground rounding Cape Reinga on New Year's Day. Autissier (PRB) leads Class I and Mouligne (Cray Valley) leads Class II at the end of the second leg. |
