Iridium
The financial disaster for creditors and stock holders is bad enough, but the closing of Iridium is also a safety hazard for sailors. Ellen MacArthur aboard Kingfisher, tried in vain to get a handheld Magellan email unit to Frenchman Jo Le Guen, attempting to row solo across the Pacific Ocean. Bad weather caused the loss of the Magellan and Jo is now alone, unable to contact is support crew.

French solo skipper Philippe Monnet attempting to beat the west about solo record of Brit Mike Golding has the same problem.

The Race
Well I'm starting to get excited. Can you imagine 100 foot multihulls racing around the world. This is going to be a great event and, as usual, we will bring you the latest news daily. Right now syndicates are getting their boats ready, lining up sponsors and sailing their qualifying runs.

Club Med announced that Danone Group has signed on as a sponsor of their huge catamaran and as we reported last week.

Roman Pazke was the first to qualify for the race despite being dismasted 544 mile from San Salvador.

America's Cup
It's quiet now. All of the syndicates are scrambling around, looking for support ... you know, money. Virtual Spectator is working on improvements to their software for the next America's Cup and you'll soon be able to by sports apparel at their web site. Isn't that exciting. We have closed down the America's Cup 2000 page and will report America's Cup news on our  Boating News page.
