America's Cup Are you ready? Round 3 starts December 2! Prada is still in the lead, having been beaten only by Team Dennis Conner. Didn't I tell you, "never turn your back on Dennis"? Dawn has guided America True into second place, just eight points behind Prada. With round 3 races worth 9 points each Prada can still be knocked out of first place. The next four syndicates are Team Dennis Conner, AmericaOne, Nippon and Young America. Our favorite, Young America, has had serious setbacks. First their boat failed at the deck, just behind the mast. Folding up like a hinge the boat nearly sank and could not be sailed again. Bringing out their second boat cost them a race. By the rules they had to forfeit one race for changing boats. Then the second boat developed cracks causing the withdraw from another race. It's amazing that they are still in the top six. Hopefully they can solve their structural problems before round 3 starts. ESPN's next airing is scheduled for Dec 19 at 4:00 PM EST. Mark your calendars and set your VCR's. We update the race results and standings daily with commentary and Press Conference notes from New Zealand.

Trans-Atlantic Rowing ON September 13, 1999 Tori Murden set out from Tenerife, the Canary Islands in a home-built, 23-foot custom rowboat on her second attempt to be the first woman to row across the Atlantic. Tori survived hurricane Lenny sporting 20-foot seas and 77-knot winds. She is currently about 350 miles from land-fall and should complete her trip in early December.
Chesapeake Bay There is one, just one, working fleet of sailboats in the United States and that's the Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks. These boats dredge the dwindling oyster beds under sail alone. In fact Maryland law requires that they do not have engines. Instead they use a pusher, literally a rowboat with a big inboard engine, strapped to the Skipjack's stern. With only a half-dozen boats left the fleet is nearly gone. To help preserve the last of these national treasures, the Maryland Commission for Celebration 2000 is proposing subsidized insurance for the owners of the boats. If you plan on visiting the Chesapeake Bay be sure to see and support these beautiful boats. Many have taken to chartering to supplement their dwindling income from the oyster trade.

End of an Era With mixed emotion we're putting Mad Max up for sale. She has won many races for us, 34 in the last three years with an average crew of weekend, beer can sailors. But it's time for us to move up to a larger boat. We need more room for our cameras, equipment and extra crew-members so we can bring you better sailing coverage. So, we've just purchased a Santana 30/30GP. From our new platform we will be able to bring you more photographs and more videos of our favorite sport.
Fishing and Cruising Classical Gas, our aging power-boat, is in the back yard getting winterized. We have a number of projects planned for the winter months including upgrading the battery charger and replacing the cushions. This summer we will be taking her to the Delaware Bay for some serious fishing and cruising some of our favorite spots on the Chesapeake.
