marinersguide.com The Magic and Mythology of Nautical Knots

The Ashley Stop Knot

The Ashley Stop is a better stop knot than the Figure Eight. It is larger, less likely to pull through or jam in blocks and easy to untie, even when pounded in by time and the elements.

Tying the Knot
1. First make a Slip Knot.
2. Pull on the "Standing Part" to shorten the loop.
3. Push the "Bitter End" all the way through the loop.
4. Pull the "Standing Part" to draw up the knot.
