The Figure Eight

The FIgure Eight Knot, I like to call it the twisted sister to the Overhand Knot, is the basic stop knot. Use it to prevent the ends from unraveling and to keep the line from running out of blocks and fair leads. For a better stop knot see the Ashley Stop.
 
Tying the Knot
1. Make a loop, right hand over left.
2. Wrap the "Bitter End" around the "Standing Part".
3. Put the end down through the loop.
4. Draw up the knot.
