Hi MarinersGuide.com,
Sail-World New Zealand - the latest NZ and World news
Welcome to the Monday edition of Sail-World.Com/NZ's newsletter.
In Korea, the young BlackMatch racing crew have finished third in the Korea Match Racing Cup.
Now sailing under the auspices of Emirates Team New Zealand, and with double America's Cup winner, Tony Rae, aboard they dispatched world #1 Mathieu Richard (FRA) in the quarterfinals. After getting on the wrong side of some umpiring decisions, they failed to progress to the finals by a margin of 3-2.
However BlackMatch could take some consolation in winning the sail-off for third place, in the richest regatta on the World Match Racing Tour.
In this issue we have featured the daily reports from BlackMatch, and you can read how this dramatic series unfolded for them.
Those who have followed the rise of this young crew of RNZYS Youth program graduates, will be particularly heartened with the result from Korea.
This was a regatta, which with a bit of luck going the Kiwi way, was very winnable for BlackMatch. The fact that it carried substantial prizemoney - with the winner taking away a six figure prize (in NZD) - is sufficent to attract the top match racers from around the world.
Significantly two of the big names exited the regatta at the conclusion of the Round Robin.
However for BlackMatch this was a great result from a Grade 1 event.
Also third, but a long way distant in the Mirabaud Bol d'Or regatta in Geneva, Switzerland was Alinghi sailing in the D35's. Winner of the 60 mile race sailed in light conditions was a D35 sailed by Frank Cammas of Groupama fame and one who is closely associated with BMW Oracle Racing.
In this issue we have a full report from Valencia Sailing, along with photos from this light airs regatta.
Also on the multihull front have a look at the spectacular capsize shots from the iShares Cup which concluded over the weekend.
In the New York YC Regatta, the supermaxi Speedboat has had her first race, but was eclipsed on IRC by by Numbers (Dan Meyer) - over 30ft shorter than the stunning supermaxi. Also racing was the Volvo 70 Puma (Ken Read) - however although beaten around the buoys Puma and Speedboat are expected to show the Newport Bermuda race fleet a clean pair of heels when straight-lining.
At the other end of the scale, Philippa Wood, has become the first person to sail Cook Strait in an Optimist. She achieved this feat on Sunday, taking five and a half hours for the crossing. We have featured the report from The Nelson Daily Mail, plus the video clip (almost five minutes duration) of this remarkable voyage.
It's a must see.
Good Sailing!
