MEDIA ALERT
What: Postponement of the 2008 Fort Lauderdale to Charleston Ocean Yacht
Race
Statement from SORC (Southern Ocean Racing Conference), organizers:
Buck Gillette, Chairman of the Fort Lauderdale to Charleston Ocean Yacht
Race:
"Despite strong interest from potential competitors in the revival of the
Fort Lauderdale to Charleston Ocean Yacht Race, there didn't seem to be
enough time for boat owners and crew to properly prepare for the April 23
start.
"The 2008 Fort Lauderdale to Charleston Ocean Yacht Race had been postponed
and it will be rescheduled for 2009 at a time that is consistent with
Charleston Race Week and the Charleston to Bermuda Race.
"We have already contacted each of the boat owners who had entered the 2008
race and advised them of the race postponement."
About: This event marks the rebirth of a race that originated in 1968 and
ran for 10 years. The race traditionally starts just outside of Port
Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and finishes just outside of Charleston
Harbor. The race record of 33hr:28min:56sec was established in 1974 by
Phantom a C&C 66, owned by Ralph B. Ryder Jr
