marinersguide.com EVIL WAVES, the first year

Vision:

RAPID TRANSIT!
Rapid Transit stands for quickly learning the peculiarities of a new boat, a fast boat. Rapid transit means a quick transition from our old ways on the pocket-rocket Mad Max, to a boat that should be happier straight-lining. Rapid Transit means concentrating on boat speed, make the boat go!

Strategy:

We've purchased a larger faster boat better suited to down-the-bay racing. A bigger, dryer boat with more room for our video and photography equipment. Now we have to get it ready and learn how to sail it ... fast. We're leaving a proven race winner in Mad Max. We know how to win on Mad Max, she is an outstanding boat. Now we have to start over on a different platform.

Projects:

  • Name the boat.

Completed: What do you call a Santana 30/30? Janyce came up with "Evil Waves" which we really like. Got any ideas? Send us an email. We'll also need a renaming ceremony and new graphics. Let's decide on a name before the Atlantic City boat show so we can talk to vendors about graphics.

  • Get the boat in race condition.

Completed: The boat needs some structural work so we have to hand it over to our friends at Custom Offshore.

Completed: Have Custom Offshore do the bottom and prep the boat in the spring.

Completed: Deliver the boat to the Chesapeake Bay, a 60 mile cruise in early spring.

Completed: Find a slip. This one's too big to dry-sail. we'll need a slip and regular bottom cleaning.

New Boat
  • Learn how to sail it.

Completed: Determine our race schedule for this season. Naturally we will do Thursday nights in Havre do Grace and we also want to do more down-the-bay racing. We will need lots of weekend practice as well. And then there will be deliveries and bring-backs.

  • Find and develop new crew.

Task: We'll probably need two full crews of six each. We'll be picking up trainee's on Thursdays and anyone interested should send us email.

Task: Check with experienced friends who might not currently have a boat.

Completed: Create a web page for the new boat and post a message on the Chesapeake Bay Dock Swap.

  • List and prioritize upgrades for 2001.

Task: This will be ongoing once the boat is in the water.

Summary: This will be a very busy year, a tremendous opportunity to learn new techniques and make new friends! We look forward to seeing you on the water.
